3 Most Popular Smartphones in the US

The smartphone market has been one of the largest growing technology sectors in recent memory. Every year, a new cell phone comes out and every year people clamor for it- but there has not been as much buzz about smartphones as there has been on the eve of the newest iPhone release. The reason for this is not easily
explainable because it is multi-faceted. It has to do with capitalism, with the nature of marketing (and Apple’s seemingly masterful use of it,) as well as a gazillion other things both social, psychological and economical. Either way, smartphones are one of the hottest items going these days, and pretty much everyone has one now- at least that is how it seems when you are at the bus stop, the coffee shop or just walking down the street. It seems as if it is the item to have, and understandably so.

The power of the Apple machine

Who does not want their music player, access to the internet and everything else contained in one, small enough package. It is almost a god send, and makes me wonder what the next generation of smartphone like products will look like, and how they will work, and how the public will eat them up. According to comScore, which is a retail study company, Apple was responsible for the top 3 selling smartphones last year. While Apple is dominating (like it usually does) other companies are starting to create smartphone that will one day compete with Apple, if not actually take a large portion of the market share from them- that is the end goal anyway.

1. The iPhone 4

Yup, all the top three selling phone were made and manufactured by Apple: surprise, surprise. The hoopla that surrounded the iPhone 4’s release was unbelievable, as people lined up around the block to get their hands on one of the phones during the holiday shopping season. There is very little doubt that next Christmas will be any different, as Apple will probably unveil their latest iPhone model, and people will be clamoring for it as well, and will be ready to shell their iPhone 4, which they wanted so badly only a year before- thus is the capitalist, consumer society we live in.

2. The iPhone 3GS

This less expensive version of the iPhone was the second highest selling smartphone in the country because it has all the bells and whistles that the other iPhone models have, but is a little less cheaper because it is smaller and older- and therefore it is less in demand than the iPhone 4, but still in high demand overall. Studies have shown that smartphone sales have increased by more than 98% amongst households that make less than $25,000 a year, which is a tough market to get into, but Apple and smartphones in general have found a way, it seems.

3. The iPhone 4S

This is the newest version of the iPhone 4, and what makes this position as the third highest selling smartphone so impressive is that it is only based on 2 months of sales.
